Overview of the Entrance Examination System

An overview of the types of entrance examinations and the schedule for AY2026 entrance examinations (conducted in AY2025) at this Graduate School is given in the following document.

Overview of the Entrance Examination System at the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology, The University of Tokyo

Japanese Government (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, MEXT) Scholarship students (Research Students) (Embassy Recommendation) will be accepted into this graduate school as “Graduate International Research Students (non-degree)”, in principle. Similarly, MEXT Scholarship students (Research Students) (University Recommendation) will also be accepted into this graduate school only as “Graduate International Research Students (non-degree)”. Please refer to here for more details. If the applicant wishes to proceed to the Master's or Doctoral programs after they entered as a Graduate International Research Student, they will need to take and pass the entrance examinations (Regular Admission or Special Selection for Professionals).

* AY stands for "academic year". In Japan, each academic year is from April to March in the next year.

Application Period

The application periods for AY2026 entrance examinations (conducted in AY2025) for Master's and Doctoral programs (Regular Admission and Special Selection for Professionals) are as follows.

Entrance Examination Briefing    (released on March 10, 2025)　

Entrance Examination Briefing for AY2026 Entrance Examinations will be held as follows. Those who wish to participate in the briefing should submit the entry form, which will be available from late April 2025. (updated on April 18, 2025)
Those who have completed the registration through the entry form will receive an email containing the URL, which includes the necessary information for participation in the Entrance Examination Briefing and detailed information for the Briefing.

Application Procedures

Those who wish to apply for the AY2026 Summer Entrance Examinations (conducted in AY2025) should follow the procedures below.

1. Prepare the necessary materials for your application

Check the Admission Guide of the Graduate School and your preferred department and prepare the necessary materials for your application.
Please keep the original of the Academic Transcript submitted as a copy during the admission process, as it is required at the time of enrollment procedure. The original of Certificate of Graduation/Completion/Degree is also required at the time of enrollment procedure.

2. Enter the required information to the WEB Application System below and create the application form

3. Pay your examination fee

1) Bank Transfer (in Japan):
Use the Transfer Application Form from the "WEB Application System" and ask a teller to transfer your examination fee.

2) E-shiharai.net (by credit card / at a convenience store, etc.):
Refer to "How to make Payment of Examination Fee at E-shiharai.net" and pay your examination fee as instructed.

■ Notes

• The following applicants are exempted from their examination fee payment.
  * applicants for the Doctoral program who are expected to complete a Master's or Professional degree program at the University of Tokyo immediately before their desired entrance date (i.e., those who will complete the program in September and proceed to our doctoral program in October of the same year, or those who will complete the program in March and proceed to our doctoral program in April of the same year)
  * international students on scholarships from the Japanese government (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, MEXT)

• Entrance Examination Fee Exemption for Applicants for Admission Affected by Natural Disasters.
  The University of Tokyo has taken the decision to waive the payment of entrance examination fees by applicants affected by natural disasters such as earthquakes, typhoons, floods, etc., to lighten the economic burden and to secure the opportunity of admission for applicants.
  If you wish to apply for the exemption of the examination fee for the AY2026 Summer Entrance Examinations of the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology, please refer to the following notice and mail the required documents to the address given below by a traceable method.

4. WEB Application System: Upload all required documents, and "CONFIRM" application on My Page

【Important】
Even if you create the application form, your application will not be completed until all required items are uploaded and also until you "confirm" your application on "My Page" before the deadline. Refer to instructions on "My Page" about how to "confirm" your application, etc.

Convert all the required documents into PDF files, and after you have uploaded them to the WEB Application System:My Page (available after creating the application form), click "Confirm" to “confirm” your application.

The deadline for uploading: 14:00 on Thursday, June 5, 2025 (JST)

• When your application has been confirmed on "My Page", "Application Confirmed" will be displayed on Status of Your Application, and you will receive a confirmation notice at your registered email address. Please make sure to check if your application has been confirmed on "My Page".
  
  

5. Submission of Recommendation Letters (Only for applicants who are required to submit）

1. Examinees should ask their recommenders to provide a Recommendation Letter. Examinees applying to the Department of Information and Communication Engineering are required to download the specific form from here and send it to their recommenders.

2. Examinees should register the necessary information about the examinees (their application receipt numbers, names, email addresses, etc.) and their recommenders (names, affiliations, positions, email addresses, etc.) through the "Registration Form for Recommender". (available from May 30)

3. The URL for uploading the recommendation letter will be notified to the recommender by email.

4. The recommender should upload the recommendation letter to the website indicated in that email.

5. After the recommender completes uploading, both the recommender and the examinee will receive a confirmation message by email.

• Application for SPRING GX Project Students
  There will be a call for SPRING GX project students during some time between the application deadline for entrance examinations and the enrollment date. If you wish to apply, please check the webpage regularly for the latest information.

  There will be a call for the students during some time between the application deadline for entrance examinations and the enrollment date. If you wish to apply, please check the webpage regularly for the latest information.
  日本学生支援機構大学院第一種奨学金 is available only for those who have Japanese nationality and for those whose status of residence is: Permanent Resident, Spouse or Child of Japanese National, Spouse or Child of Permanent Resident, Long Term Resident or Statutory Special Permanent Resident.
