Notifications

[Important] On the expected changes in the method of the entrance examination in Special Admission for “English Program on Intelligent Information Processing” from AY2025 Entrance Examinations (conducted in AY2024) (released on Jan 31, 2024)

As announced in the notification released on June 21, 2023, the method of the entrance examination in Special Admission for “English Program on Intelligent Information Processing” in our graduate school will be partly changed. The expected changes are as follows.

  • In the Special Admission for “English Program on Intelligent Information Processing” for AY2025 Entrance Examinations (conducted in AY2024), the following changes are expected. The detail of the Special Admission including the changes will be released by around July 2024.

    • Applications to Master’s Program and Doctoral Program via the Special Admission will be limited to those who wish to apply to Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship Students (University Recommendation).
    • The examination fee will be revised to 30,000 yen.
    • The schedule will be brought forward by about one month from that of the AY2024 Entrance Examinations (conducted in AY2023).

  • From the AY2026 Entrance Examinations (conducted in AY2025), the Special Admission for “English Program on Intelligent Information Processing” will be abolished. For the Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship Students (University Recommendation), which was applicable via the special admission, a new application scheme is expected to be introduced.

[Important] On TOEFL Score submission for the entrance examination of the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology, the University of Tokyo (released on Dec 26, 2023)

This information regarding the submission of TOEFL scores for AY2025 entrance examinations will be officially finalized and released in the admission guide in late April 2024 (TBD). Please note that applicants for the AY2025 entrance examinations must submit their scores as instructed in ‘Guidelines for Submission of TOEFL Scores (for AY2025 Entrance Examinations)’ (*1). Also, please kindly note that applicants must obtain their scores before applying for the entrance examinations (*2). This will also apply to the entrance examinations for AY2026 and the following years, as we have announced on December 28th, 2021.

(*1) If these ‘Guidelines for Submission of TOEFL Scores (for AY2025 Entrance Examinations)’ are changed later, the details will be announced on this webpage.

(*2) TOEFL scores are valid only if the TOEFL tests were taken less than two years before the entrance examinations. (For AY2025 summer entrance examinations: on or after September 1, 2022. For AY2025 winter entrance examinations: on or after March 1, 2023)
[Important] On the Winter Entrance Examinations of Department of Information Physics and Computing for Master’s Program (released on Oct 27, 2023)

Starting with AY2025 Winter Entrance Examination (conducted in AY2024) and for subsequent Winter Entrance Examinations, Department of Information Physics and Computing will be accepting applicants for the Master’s Program. Details will be made public in the admission guide of the Department of Information Physics and Computing to be released in late April, 2024.

[Important] On the expected changes from AY2025 Entrance Examinations (conducted in AY2024) (released on Jun 21, 2023)

We expect the following changes in the AY2025 entrance examinations (conducted in AY2024) of our graduate school.

  • The method of the entrance examination in Special Admission for “English Program on Intelligent Information Processing” will be partly changed. Its details will be available on the website of our graduate school around December 2023 the end of January 2024 (revised on Dec 26, 2023).

  • In the winter examinations for the Master’s program, Doctoral Program, and Doctoral Program [Special Selection for Professionals], the timing of the enrollment can be chosen from April or October 2025, at the timing of application.

  • Foreign applicants in the Summer Examination who need a new application for Certificate of Eligibility in connection with the enrollment are strongly recommended to choose April 2025 as their enrollment timing. Similarly, in the Winter Examination, such foreign applicants are strongly recommended to choose October 2025.

The same changes are expected to apply to AY2026 (conducted in AY2025) and later Entrance Examinations as well.

Schedules related to Academic Year 2024 (AY2024) Admission

The application period for AY2024 admissions (conducted in AY2023) for Master's and Doctoral programs (entrance date: October 2023 or April 2024) is as follows. For details, please carefully read both the 'Admission Guide of Graduate School of Information Science and Technology' and the 'Admission Guide' of each department (available below).

Online Application Procedures

Those who wish to apply for the AY2024 Winter Entrance Examinations (conducted in AY2023) should follow the procedures below.

1. Prepare the necessary materials for your application

Check the Admission Guide and prepare the necessary materials for your application.
This may include your transcripts, certificates, photograph, the proof of your examination fee payment (See 3. below), etc.
Depending on the department, some additional documents other than the above may be required. Please be sure to check the Admission Guide of the department of your choice.

2. Enter and check the details of your application through the application system below

Notes on Photograph Data

・Upload your photograph to the WEB Application System.
・This photograph will be used for your Examination Admission Card to verify your identity at the entrance exams. Processed or modified images cannot be accepted. Failure to verify your identity may result in disqualification. The photograph will also be used for your student ID card after your enrollment.
・Prepare a photograph as guided below:
  -Format: jpeg
  -Size: height 308 pixels × width 236 pixels
  -A clear photograph taken within the past 3 months that shows your upper body facing forward with your head uncovered, with plain background

3. Pay your examination fee

When you pay your examination fee, you can choose one of the following methods:

1) Bank Transfer:
Use the Transfer Application Form from the 'WEB Application System' and ask a teller to transfer your examination fee.

2) E-shiharai.net (by credit card / at a convenience store, etc.):
Refer to the 'How to make Payment of Examination Fee at E-shiharai.net' and pay your examination fee as instructed.

Examination fee is 30,000 JPY.

The following applicants are exempted from their examination fee payment.
 ・those who are expected to complete a Master's program or special degree program at the University of Tokyo in March 2024 and proceed to a Doctoral program in April 2024
 ・international students on scholarships from the Japanese government (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, MEXT)

Entrance Examination Fee Exemption for Applicants for Admission Affected by Natural Disasters.
The University of Tokyo has taken the decision to waive the payment of entrance examination fees by applicants affected by natural disasters such as earthquakes, typhoons, floods, etc., to lighten the economic burden and to secure the opportunity of admission for applicants.
If you wish to apply for the exemption of the examination fee for the AY2024 Winter Entrance Examinations of the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology, please refer to the following notice and mail the required documents by a traceable method.

4. Upload all required documents, and CONFIRM application

Important
Application documents must be submitted only by uploading the files to the WEB Application System. No need to mail them by post. Even if you make an application form, your application will not be completed until all required items are uploaded on ‘My Page’ and also until you confirm your application on ‘My Page’ before the deadline. Please refer to instructions on ‘My Page’ about how to confirm your application, etc.

Convert all the required documents into PDF files and upload them to the WEB Application System:My Page. (available from November 15)

The deadline for uploading: 17:00 (JST), November 21 (Tue), 2023

  • Uploading your application documents to two or more programs or departments cannot be accepted.
  • Applications which do not contain all the required documents by the deadline cannot be accepted.
  • Do not forget to click 'Confirm' after you have uploaded the required documents on ‘My Page’.
  • When your application has been confirmed on ‘My Page’, 'Application Confirmed' will be displayed on Status of Your Application, and you will receive a confirmation notice at your registered email address. Please make sure to check Status of Your Application on ‘My Page’ if your application has been confirmed.
  • Even after you have confirmed your application on ‘My Page’, you will be able to edit it, replace documents, and cancel it, until the deadline.

5. Submission of Recommendation Letters

Some departments require the applicants to submit recommendation letters. Check the Admission Guide of the department of your choice and request one from your recommender in advance of your application if necessary. If a prescribed form is provided by the department, you should also forward the form to your recommender in advance.

【Submission Procedures】

  1. Examinees should register the necessary information about the examinees themselves and their recommenders through the 'Registration Form for Recommender'. (available from November 15)
  2. The URL for uploading the recommendation letter will be notified to the recommender by email.
  3. The recommender should upload the recommendation letter to the website indicated in that email.

  4. After the recommender completes uploading, both the recommender and the examinee will receive the confirmation message by email.

6. Transfer Application for the Online Written Examinations

Those who wish to be transferred to the online written examinations should read carefully the "Notes on Difference between Online and On-site Examinations", and follow the instructions on the WEB Application System to submit "AY2024 Entrance Examination of the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology, the University of Tokyo: Transfer Application Form for the Online Examinations"

Examination Admission Card

Examination Admission Card will be delivered via E-mail to each applicant by December 18 (Mon), 2023 after the application is accepted. Follow the instructions to download your Examination Admission Card.

Notes

  • Examination Admission Card will be delivered to all the applicants (except for the applicants whose applications are not accepted) and sent to the address registered on the WEB Application System.
  • Admission notification of the successful applicants will be done with the Examinee's number printed on the Examination Admission Card.
  • Important documents (information on the exams) may be sent along with the Examination Admission Card. Be sure to download them if required.
  • We will require you to show your Examination Admission Card during on-site and online examinations. Be sure to print your Examination Admission Card and bring it with you.

TOEFL Scores

For details on how to submit your TOEFL Institutional Score Report, refer to the 'Guidelines for Submission of TOEFL Scores (for AY2024 Entrance Examinations)'. Notes on Applying

  • Applicants may not apply to more than one department in the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology at the same time in each of the Summer and Winter Entrance Examinations. In addition, applicants who are applying for the Special Admission for "English Program on Intelligent Information Processing" of the Graduate School of the Information Science and Technology cannot apply for the Winter Entrance Examinations.
    Applicants who have already passed the Summer Entrance Examinations for the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology cannot apply for the Winter Entrance Examinations without first declining the enrollment. Similarly, applicants who have already passed the Special Admission for "English Program on Intelligent Information Processing" of the Graduate School of the Information Science and Technology cannot apply for the Summer Entrance Examinations without first declining the enrollment.
    Also, applicants cannot be enrolled in the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology while also enrolled in other universities or other schools at the University of Tokyo.
  • After the application process is completed, no changes to the documents will be accepted and there will be no refund of examination fee, under any circumstances.

From AY2024 Entrance Examination (conducted in 2023), Department of Computer Science will apply the following changes to the summer entrance examination for “Doctoral Program” and “Doctoral Program [Special Selection for Professionals]”  

  • Before the primary examination, screening of the applicants will be conducted by evaluating application documents submitted by the applicants. The primary examination will be conducted for only the applicants who have passed the document screening.

  • In the primary examination, the written examination of the general education subject (mathematics) will not be conducted.

From AY2023, the Department of Computer Science will not recruit new students for the Master’s program in the winter entrance examination. The department will continue to recruit new students for the Doctoral program, but will not conduct written examinations and will evaluate applicants through submitted documents and oral examinations, in the winter entrance examination.

Regarding submission of TOEFL scores instead of foreign language examinations for entrance examinations starting with the AY2023 entrance examination: this information will be officially finalized and released in the admission guide in late April 2022 (TBD). Please note that applicants for the AY2023 entrance examinations must submit their scores to the Office of Graduate School of Information Science and Technology as instructed in ‘Guidelines for Submission of TOEFL Scores (for AY2023 Entrance Examinations)’ (※1). Also, please kindly note that applicants must obtain their scores before the application documents are submitted (※2), which differs from the previous year’s AY2022 entrance examination. This will also apply to the following year’s AY2024 entrance examination. (※3)

※1 If these ‘Guidelines for Submission of TOEFL Scores (for AY2023 Entrance Examinations)’ are changed later, the details will be available on this webpage.

※2 TOEFL scores are considered valid for submission if the TOEFL tests were taken less than two years before the entrance examinations. (For AY2023 summer entrance examinations: on or after September 1, 2020. For AY2023 winter entrance examinations: on or after March 1, 2021)

※3 For only the AY2023 and AY2024 entrance examinations, as a transitional measure, by submitting ‘Notice of unacquired TOEFL iBT Scores, applicants who fail to obtain their scores by the deadline for uploading required documents will be allowed to apply for the entrance examinations as an exception.
