The Security Informatics Education and Research Center (SI Center) will host its 8th symposium online, titled “Latest Developments in Post-Quantum Cryptography and Security Risks: Preparing for the Coming Era of Quantum Computing.”
Advances in quantum computing could pose a fundamental threat to conventional public-key cryptography, including RSA and elliptic curve cryptography. In particular, the risk of “Harvest Now, Decrypt Later”—in which communications and data considered secure today are collected for future decryption—presents a significant challenge to the long-term protection of information held by government agencies, universities, and businesses.
Against this backdrop, the standardization of post-quantum cryptographic algorithms is progressing rapidly. Several algorithms have already been selected and published through the NIST standardization process, and efforts are now moving toward implementation and deployment.
However, PQC also presents challenges involving key sizes, computational costs, implementation vulnerabilities, and compatibility with existing infrastructure. Migration therefore involves complex technical and operational considerations that go beyond simply replacing existing cryptographic algorithms.
This symposium will feature expert presentations on technological developments in PQC, recent progress in standardization, challenges in applying PQC to real-world systems, and migration strategies. Discussions will also explore the implications for the long-term protection of information assets and the operation of networks that serve as critical social infrastructure.
Participation is free of charge, but advance registration is required.
