Connecting Your Research Experience to Your Career: A 90-Minute Introduction to Working in the Private Sector
As you pursue your research, you may sometimes feel uncertain about your future career.
After completing graduate school, there are many possible paths. In addition to continuing research at a university or research institute, you may work in research or business in the private sector, enter public service, start a company, or pursue other opportunities. At the same time, many students have limited opportunities to learn about careers in private companies or the job-hunting process, making it difficult to form a clear picture of these options.
The Graduate School of Information Science and Technology at the University of Tokyo will therefore hold a career event to help students learn about working in the private sector, different ways of working, and the basics of job hunting in Japan. The event is being organized with the cooperation of Simplex Holdings, Inc., a participating company in the Sponsorship Program for Promoting Diversity in Information Technology Talent.
The session will begin with an introduction to the general job-hunting process. Employees currently working within the Simplex Group will then talk about their actual responsibilities and how projects are carried out. The second half will feature small-group discussions, providing participants with an opportunity to ask candid questions about work, job hunting, the relationship between research and career development, and life as a working professional.
This event may be particularly useful for those who:
- are unsure about the typical timeline for job hunting;
- would like to know how to research and choose companies and occupations;
- would like to learn what people working in companies actually do on a day-to-day basis;
- would like to understand how experience gained through graduate research can be applied in the workplace;
- would like to consider a broad range of career options, including careers outside research; or
- would like to ask working professionals candid questions before beginning their job search.
This event is not intended to encourage participants to seek employment at any particular company. Please feel free to join us as an opportunity to explore your options and make a career decision that feels right for you.
