Education and Research Goals

The education and research goals are to provide an environment where students can master their systematic knowledge of information science and technology, and to foster individuals who will act as leaders in research and development through the pursuit of the scientific method, thereby contributing to the further development of this field.

Master's Program

 Degree Conferral Policy

To foster individuals as stated in the educational and research goals of the Graduate School, the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology, the University of Tokyo, confers Master of Information Science and Technology on students who have achieved the goals stated below, obtained the required credits, successfully defended their master’s theses, and passed the final examination.

  • Having acquired systematic, technical knowledge and a broad perspective on information science and technology and being able to lead research and development of information science and technology by using a scientific method.
  • Being capable of making a significant contribution to the development of society with high ethical standards and responsibility, based on the needs of society and knowledge of information science and technology.
  • Having fundamental skills in information science and technology, having sufficient international skills to actively participate in global activities, and having the ability to solve unexplored problems to pave a way for the future.

Curriculum Policy

To ensure that students can achieve the goals stated in the Degree Conferral Policy of the Graduate School, the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology, the University of Tokyo, systematically designs and teaches a curriculum according to the following policies.

  • We provide specialized courses on information science and technology based on a systematic curriculum to teach fundamental knowledge of information science and technology and enhance practical skills and thinking ability of students through exercises and seminars.
  • We assign academic advisors to individual students and establish a research guidance system to help students to obtain practical technical knowledge and a broad perspective through discussions with experts including vice academic advisors, and to support their thesis writing.
  • We provide education in collaboration with industry in addition to academia. We also help students to acquire sufficient skills for international activities by offering them opportunities for international exchanges through collaboration with overseas universities and research institutions.
  • Professors with specialized knowledge in information science and technology evaluate the research result of each master’s thesis through a thorough reading of the thesis and oral examinations.
  • We evaluate the teaching effectiveness of each course strictly based on the grade evaluation standard established by the University of Tokyo and the Graduate School, and the grade evaluation method specified by each course instructor.

Doctoral Program

Degree Conferral Policy

To foster individuals as stated in the educational and research goals of the Graduate School, the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology, the University of Tokyo, confers Doctor of Philosophy in the field of Information Science and Technology on students who have achieved the goals stated below, have obtained the required credits, successfully defended their doctoral dissertations, and passed the final examination.

  • Having acquired systematic and highly technical knowledge on information science and technology and appropriate logical judgment skills and being able to lead research and development of information science and technology by using a scientific method and to make academic contributions to the field of information science and technology.
  • Having deep knowledge of information science and technology and being able to quickly perceive the needs of society and make significant contributions to the development of society with high ethical standards and responsibility.
  • Having deep insight on information science and technology, having sufficient international skills to lead global activities, and being capable of pioneering uncharted fields to pave a way for the future.

Curriculum Policy
