タイトル："Can one hear the shape of a drum/dream?" and related topics
Abstract:
A mathematician, Mark Kac, was the first one to pose the question in the title over a quarter century ago. The essence of the question is whetehr the infinite set of eigenvalues determines the shape of the structure uniquely. The question generated numerous papers and finally a negative reply. In this lecture we deal with a more modest objective: Construct the structure that has a postulated mode shape.As it often happens, this humbler approach showed that "less is more"--which is consistent with the oriental thinking-- and resulted with some first closed-form solutions in buckling and vibrations.
