Our research activities encompass distributed management of personal
data for the sake of security improvement, cost reduction,
individuals' autonomy, privacy protection, and social mutual
assistance. We are collaborating with other universities and private
companies towards social implementation of the research results. Our
research focus also includes relevant fundamental technologies on
ontologies and natural-language processing, among others.
Our laboratory conducts extensive, in-depth research on innovative data processing systems. With the goal of creating a comfortable and safe information society in 10 to 20 years, we take a multi-faceted approach to achieving the utmost levels of speed and light-weight design of computer systems and in conducting research and development on computer applications.
Image and multimedia processing
At our laboratory, we engage in innovative endeavors to break new ground in image and multimedia technologies that currently include :multimedia lifelogging technology (data processing and application for digitalized lifestyles, FoodLog), 3D video (effective handling of vast amounts of data from 3D images that can be accessed from multiple perspectives), manga processing (retrieval and drawing assistance, content analysis), etc.
Esaki-Lab has researched on advanced Internet architecture and its
key component technologies, as a core R&D institute of the WIDE
Project that introduces the Internet
to Japan and world with a lot of research and industry players.
Our R&D activities are based on practical research in right-hand
and on practical operation in left-hand, with industry and
government for global society, while respecting running code.
Especially, Esaki-Lab has initiated the GUTP, which is for smart campus and is
using the campus of University of Tokyo as a live test-bed.
Calculating Method for the Evolution
In our laboratory, research is focused on the theory and application
of so-called Evolutionary Methods, like Genetic Algorithms, Genetic
Programming, Synthetic Biology and Artificial Life.
By this method, we aim to solve a large array of problems,
such as optimization, artificial intelligence, induction, automatic
synthesis of programs and others, in what we call "Learning from
Media Technologies for Augmenting the Real World
We have been pioneering the paradigm of human-centric media and content technologies. Our interests include Augmented Reality, Human Interface, "Computer Vision in the Wild", " Interaction Design for Group Work", Entertainment Computing, and Media Arts.
Parallel and distributed computing
We focus on software for parallel computing systems, which are becoming increasingly prevalent thanks to multi-core CPU and cloud computing. Research goals include development of highly productive systems (languages, tools and libraries) that can be used to develop reliable, high-performance software using such platforms. We welcome motivated individuals interested in researching the software that forms the foundation of computer systems.
Natural Language Processing, Artificial Intelligence for Games
We are developing fundamental AI technologies as well as practical applications, with two main focuses: natural language processing and game AI. Our recent research topics include deep learning-based NLP, natural language understanding with world models, and reinforcement learning for imperfect information games.
Multimedia, Image Recognition & Processing, Pattern Recognition
Our main research fields are multimedia, computer vision, pattern recognition, and machine learning. We
mainly focus on (1) big multimedia data analysis and attractiveness computing based on it, (2) object/action
recognition and machine learning, (3) optimization and high-speed processing, and so on.
Our research group explores architectures and core technologies for ubiquitous computing environment. We develop new sensing modalities and enabling technologies that create a smart and attentive user environment. Specifically, we work on RF energy harvesting sensor networks, wireless power transfer, digital fabrication technology, and new application services that have social significance.
Large-Scale Data Analysis, Graph Mining
Our research group is studying graph mining methods for large-scale data analysis and their social applications, which support human decision making. Our research outcomes have been widely used for evidence-based policy making and strategic planning in research and development.
There are various problems such as stealing and information fraud in the
infrastructure for e-commance. On base of new safe and secure systems
applicable to such real problems, we establish information security
technologies through next generation personal authentication techniques.
Computer Architecture, Human-Computer Interaction
The basic theme of the laboratory is "computing for the future". The theme involves researches to improve performance, efficiency, and dependability of computers, as well as to achieve never-seen-before services for a person by those efficient computers. Two approaches are cooperating each other here to enrich our life with computing. Features of our researches are as follows; we investigate inside CPUs, and implement free-minded ideas into real systems to experience.
Information Biology, Complex Systems
Biology becomes a frontier field among sciences and unveiling the systems' behavior requires exploitation of recent progress in diverse research fields. Experimental studies have hitherto been played central roles in biology. Instead my laboratory tries to answer many biological riddles by theoretical approaches such as information science and nonlinear physics.
Sensor-actuator networking with TCP/IP, is being applied to social infrastructures including smart grid for monitoring, managing and controlling the facilities. We study and develop the architecture for communication, data management, system development and operation for sensors and actuators.
Database engineering, web engineering
In order to address data engineering challenges such as super-large-scale web mining, advanced database integration storage, independent IT systems and geo-environmental digital libraries, our database technology-based research takes a multi-faceted approach to include system software, advanced applications, hardware and algorithms.
Networks, urban sensing
We are currently conducting study on ad hoc networks, sensor networks and post-NGN in order to create well-designed, easy-to-use networks. Furthermore, we also test the application of such networks in urban sensing, urban computing and GIS.
We are working on computer vision technologies that extract various knowledge about a scene from visual information. In particular, we are investigating a wide range of problems including first-person-view video analysis for in-depth understanding of group activities, and object appearance modeling closely related to human material perception.
Our laboratory boasts internationally-unique, collective expertise in four major fields of information security, specifically cryptography, network security, computer security and security management. Our information security specialists are in high demand and all share the same ambition and strong sense of responsibility for research that helps create a safe society.

Intelligent Information Processing, ITS
Our laboratory conducts interdisciplinary research involving areas such as image recognition and ergonomics. Our research focuses on the development of automotive image sensing systems and vehicle infrastructure integration systems for driving safety support. Our studies also incorporate ergonomic aspects using driving simulators. We have also begun research into human security monitoring technology.
Our laboratory engages in method development for interpreting social phenomena by applying visualization techniques in the collection and analysis of vast amounts of web information, as well as by extracting beneficial data from the dynamic alteration occurring within text content and link structures. We strive to create new web analytical technology, web services and applications that have capabilities beyond those of mere search engines.

Our laboratory studies on Natural Language Processing (NLP) for understanding the real world through text. In particular, we engage in fundamental research on understanding, organizing and searching the language information, and use the outcome to realize a system that ``reads'' social situations from text.

Wireless communication networks
We focuses our attention on exploring key technologies of next-generation wireless communication networks, such as 5G and IoT. More specifically, our research interests include, but are not limited to: transmission technology, digital signal processing, network protocols, information theoretic security, cooperative communications, and wireless sensor networks.
Multimedia information analysis, image and video retrieval
We are addressing multimedia semantic content analysis such as image
and video recognition, as well as multimedia retrieval and multimedia
mining. We especially put emphasis on visual information analysis
toward building computer program which can understand the scene from
observation as our ultimate goal. We seek for graduate students who
want to tackle multimedia semantic content analysis, which is easy for
human but very difficult for computer programs, and who are interested
in applications such as multimedia retrieval.
We live in a world that runs on software; software is everywhere from the things you touch every day (laptops, smart phones, TVs, cars) to the infrastructure of society (hospitals, transportation, finance, government). Hu Lab (Programming Research Lab) explores and develops new programming theories, novel programming languages, and advanced programming tools for construction, implementation, testing, validation and verification of software.
